Hospitality

I've been thinking a lot about hospitality lately. The old fashioned hospitality of preparing for and welcoming guests into your home.
We had such a great time on our road trip and were on the receiving end of wonderful hospitality.
Experiencing such hospitality from my children was a blessing, even if it was a bit awkward for me.
You see, I'm not as adept at receiving.
I tend to feel more comfortable on the giving end.
I learned that from my folks. They were the ones who taught me a lot about hospitality.
Prepare well,
welcome generously,
and be present.
It's kind of like the Bible story of Mary & Martha. Martha is busy preparing and serving her guests and forgets about the welcoming, being present part.
Mary sits and listens and chooses 'the better part'.
Both roles are important in good hospitality.
So the past few days I was busy preparing the house and food for Torp's visit.
Cleaning, dusting, and arranging things so he would be comfortable and feel welcomed.
Now that the 'Martha' work is done,
I can sit like Mary and take the better part.

Sitting on the deck last night enjoying the conversation, food, and drink was certainly the better part!
